Story (IP)

What is Story Protocol?

Story Protocol is redefining the way intellectual property (IP) is managed by moving it onto the blockchain, transforming IP assets into tokenized, liquid, and easily licensable digital properties. Traditionally, IP rights have been constrained by complex and outdated legal frameworks, making licensing and management cumbersome and expensive — particularly for independent creators. As a result, the multi-trillion-dollar IP industry has remained inefficient, illiquid, and largely disconnected from the digital economy. Story Protocol seeks to change that by enabling seamless interoperability, accessibility, and value creation for creators and businesses alike.

Step-by-Step Guide to Staking IP via IP Staking Dashboard

Step 1: Acquire IP and Access the Staking Dashboard

  • Acquire IP and Access the Staking DashaTransfer IP to your crypto wallet—this can be a Cosmos wallet like Keplr or an EVM wallet like Metamask.

  • Go to the Story Protocol Staking Dashboard.

Step 2: Acquire IP and Access the Staking Dashboard

  • Click Connect Wallet.

  • Choose your wallet extension from the list (e.g., MetaMask or another supported wallet).

  • Approve the connection request in your wallet.

Step 3: Select a Validator

  • Browse the list of available validators supporting unlocked tokens.

  • If you own locked tokens choose Everstake for stable performance and optimized staking conditions. Reach Everstake by the link.

  • On the validator page, you will see:

    • Your available IP token balance.

    • Your currently staked amount.

    • Commission rates and staking terms.

Step 4: Stake Your IP Tokens

  • Click Stake.

  • In the pop-up window:

    • Enter the number of IP tokens you wish to stake (minimum: 1024 IP).

    • Select your preferred staking period from the dropdown menu.

    • Click Stake IP.

  • Confirm the transaction in your wallet.

Step 5: Verify and Refresh

  • After successful staking, a green confirmation message will appear.

  • Click View Transaction to check the transaction status on the blockchain explorer.

  • Refresh the validator page on the dashboard to see your updated staked amount.

Congratulations! You have staked your IP tokens with Everstake on the Story Protocol Staking Dashboard.

Where can I stake Story (IP)?

You can choose a crypto wallet convenient for you and use the guide at the link or write to Everstake support and get more detailed information. While numerous wallets support IP token, staking is available only on Story Staking Dashboard by connecting your wallet to this platform.

Slashing

  1. Double sign: If a validator signs twice for the same block, they lose 5% of tokens and get permanently jailed (tombstoned).

  2. Downtime: If a validator misses 95% of the past 28,800 blocks, they lose 0.02% of tokens and get temporarily jailed.

Jailed validators can't participate in consensus or earn rewards. After a 10-minute cooldown, they can unjail themselves (costs 1 IP fee) if their stake exceeds the 1024 IP minimum.

FAQ

Story Explorers
What is IP?

An IP token can refer either to a specific cryptocurrency within the Story Protocol network or to the broader concept of tokenizing intellectual property (IP) rights.

Within Story Protocol, the $IP token serves as the network’s native utility asset — used for transactions, staking to secure the network, paying licensing fees, and participating in governance, as outlined by Gate.io and CoinMarketCap.

More broadly, an IP token represents ownership and rights to intellectual property on the blockchain. It enables fractional ownership, automated licensing, and royalty distribution through smart contracts, bringing transparency and liquidity to the IP economy.

IP Supply and Distribution

The total supply of IP tokens is 1 billion, distributed strategically to ensure a balanced approach, promote decentralization and long-term commitment to the project’s success:

  • 38.4% – Ecosystem & Community incentives

  • 10% – Initial Incentives for early adopters

  • 10% – Foundation Reserve

  • 21.6% – Early Backers (vesting over 48 months)

  • 20% – Core Contributors (vesting over multiple years)

To prevent market manipulation and ensure long-term sustainability, tokens allocated to the team and investors are locked for extended periods. However, these tokens can still be staked under specific conditions.

Locked and Unlocked IP tokens

Story Protocol introduces two types of IP tokens:

  1. Unlocked Tokens: These tokens are freely transferable and can be used for transactions, paying network fees, or staking.

  2. Locked Tokens: Typically allocated to team members and investors, these tokens are subject to a vesting schedule and cannot be transferred until unlocked. However, they can be staked under specific conditions.

Both types of tokens hold equal voting power, meaning that validators managing them have proportional governance influence. Additionally, both locked and unlocked tokens are subject to slashing penalties if validators fail to maintain network security and uptime.

Flexible and Fixed IP staking

Story Protocol offers two staking types:

  1. Flexible Staking: Works by default and allows unstaking at any time, with a 14-day unbonding period. The only way to stake locked tokens is flexible staking.

  2. Fixed Staking (for unlocked tokens): Offers reward multipliers based on staking duration:

    1. 90 Days → 1.1x Rewards

    2. 360 Days → 1.5x Rewards

    3. 540 Days → 2x Rewards

Control over User's Funds

Validators don't have control over users' funds in blockchain networks. Instead, they validate transactions and participate in the consensus process based on the rules defined by the network protocol. Users retain control over their funds through private keys, which are used to sign transactions and authorize transfers. Validators' roles involve confirming the validity of transactions and blocks, but they don't have the authority to access or manipulate users' funds.

Rewards Distribution

Staking rewards on the Story Protocol are distributed with every block, offering an average annual percentage rate (APR) of around 5–6%. Once a staking address accumulates at least 8 $IP in rewards, the amount is added to the distribution queue and becomes claimable after processing.

The yield a delegator receives depends on the current inflation rate, the total amount of IP staked, validator uptime, and validator commission. Validator commission is a percentage fee deducted from staking rewards, while uptime is measured by the validator’s network performance (proposing and signing blocks).

What is IP Portal?

The IP Portal is a platform that simplifies intellectual property (IP) management for creators, developers, and businesses. It uses the unique features of the Story blockchain to provide tools to register ownership, define licensing terms, and manage revenue within a transparent and automated environment.

Users can register various forms of digital content, such as artwork, video, audio, or AI-generated material, as intellectual property. The platform offers integrated options for licensing and monetization, and technical expertise is not needed. Explore more in the article.

What is PIL on Story Protocol?

PIL is a code-based contract template that streamlines and automates the licensing and monetization process of IP through the use of blockchain-specific instruments. In a nutshell, it integrates legal terms directly into smart contracts, which not only simplifies the entire management process but also enhances its efficiency and transparency.

Creators register their IP as an IP Asset in the form of an ERC-721 NFT, which, however, is used for tokenizing creative works, data sets, or AI models rather than collectibles. Each IP Asset is linked to an IP Account, which, in the technological sense, is a smart contract wallet based on the ERC-6551 standard. The IP Account can execute transactions and interact with dApps, thus giving the IP Asset an on-chain identity. Explore more in the Article.
